Wishing you a safe and happy holiday… filled with colourful walls, amazing shadows and killer contrast!

Yet another unexciting change – and it made me think about the way in which colour and contrast affects how I see the world around me. The only reason I looked at this mailbox when I drove past the second time was to see how much it had changed – if I hadn’t photographed it before, I would have paid no attention to it whatsoever… and it sure wouldn’t have caught my eye this time around. I’m not even sure if I would have noticed it if I had walked past (when I’ve got more time to look at things) – it’s pretty mediocre now. It’s obvious that the business has changed hands – I wonder what is the process that dictates the way in which it is re-painted? Sure, if it’s a large chain store these things would be pretty well set out in a style guide… but what about small businesses? Do they hire someone to redecorate? I’ve always been of the opinion that my photographs purely document my surroundings and the way I see the world – I can take no credit for the amazing colour schemes or places I find. Someone else visualised and created that… all I’m doing is showing them to you.

… please excuse the vignette on the first photo. It was early on in the series!

Yay for aimless driving and fun streets! And walking, ticking spots off my (everlasting) list, finding new places/rediscovering old ones… and I guess for strange looks from people as well as waiting for a change of lights so it’s safe to stand in the middle of the road. I take most of my photographs on Sundays – there’s less businesses open, less people around – which, in general, means less traffic. It’s nice to be able to take my time, and not feel like someone is judging me or wondering what on earth I’m doing… you’d think by now I would be used to it!

You’re going to have to take my word for the fact that this is even in the same place… and, to be honest – I’m not even sure if I’ve photographed the same section of wall because it is just so different to last time I was there. Usually there’s some little indicator of times gone by… a dint, a crack in the cement… I haven’t even got anything to line it up with, let alone compare the positioning! Despite how underwhelming the ‘after’ photo is, I promise it is in the same car park/business complex, and part of the same wall… trust me. I don’t forget these things!

Sometimes I swear my photos improve with age – and sometimes they do not age gracefully at ALL. I guess it’s the progression of the way in which I see things… and I’ve got visual proof of that happening! That said, there’s some photos I just love – I’m never quite sure if it’s because of my emotional attachment to it (wait… hear me out!) or the subject matter. There are definitely some with a story – whether it be how I found that place, how many times I went back to try and take it, what happened that day… or what dumb position I got myself into to get the end result I wanted. On the other hand, there’s others that just ‘worked’. Sometimes it’s easy, and other days it’s mighty hard! That’s the creative process, I guess.
