Yay for photo drives in colourful industrial areas! I’ve been around this area a bit before, but somehow managed to miss a little corner of the suburb… and what a corner it was. Not all of these are from there, but I’m absolutely loving the clean crisp morning light at this time of year… the colours just about glow!

It’s been a bit chaos around here lately – and my computer is agreeing with me! Lots of places I want to go, so hopefully I’ll be able to get to them in the next few weekends. I’ve started a new job as well, so am driving past different places on my way to work… sadly I don’t work in a large industrial precinct any more (yep, bet that is the first and last time you’ll ever hear that!) so I’m dealing with residential streets instead. Which, to be honest… is nowhere near as interesting as big blocky colours and shadows. All good, I’ll work it out for sure.

Recently I had the privilege of photographing some ‘local hangouts’ for TBC Magazine – a Brisbane quarterly street press publication. After a few panic moments about how I didn’t photograph ‘hangouts’ (unless you’re me, and hangout photographing industrial areas?! Somehow I don’t think that counts…) I decided to put my spin on it and photograph local restaurants and coffee shops that had great wall art. You know, since I love a colourful wall, right?! It turned out to be harder than I thought – light was inevitably terrible, or people were sitting in my picture (how DARE they?!), and it also meant I drank a hell of a lot of coffee. The latter may be seen as a positive, but I get the shakes if I drink too much – which isn’t actually all that great when you’re holding a camera. There’s plenty of places on my shortlist that I ran out of time to visit – I’ll be drinking coffee for some time yet so there’s a possibility this series could continue for a while!

If you like your coffee or meal accompanied by a bit of colour, you should sure go and check these places out:

It’s been an interesting last few weeks – on one hand they’ve flown by, but when I stop to think about the individual bits there’s a LOT that’s happened! For the first time, I’ve actually met in person two of the creative individuals that I’ve discovered through the big bad world of social media… its a strange way of meeting people, but it’s nice to put some faces to names, and it’s good to be out and about. Over the weekend we stopped so I could take a photo of some amazing half-painted roller doors… and as I was about to hop out the painter also turned up. I swore. My husband laughed at me. Sadly, I missed out on that photo! Next day they didn’t look quite as good, but at least I’ve got something! (second last photo – the red was all still there the day before). Also, why do I keep taking photos of toilet windows?! Never realised that security bars were the perfect width to hold a roll of toilet paper.

Slowly getting that work/life/creative balance back in check… slowly! I’m having one of those ‘being a grown up sucks!’ moments – working out what you’re supposed to be doing when and what’s important vs urgent is all so confusing. Oh to just be able to do cruisy things all day, right?! We all know I’d get bored with that, but sometimes it’s nice to wish, isn’t it?! My ‘creative’ side has taken a big hit lately – and I think it’s about time I make it a bit more of a priority for a while… or that’s the plan, at least. We’ll see how that goes!
